Getting Around Latvia

Comprehensive transport details to ensure smooth travel from arrival to regional exploration.

Riga International Airport (RIX)

The largest aviation hub in the Baltics. RIX connects Latvia to over 100 destinations worldwide via direct flights. The national carrier, airBaltic, operates most flights.

  • To City Center: Take Bus No. 22 (approx. 30 mins) or official taxis (Baltic Taxi, Red Cab).
  • Facilities: Modern terminals, VIP lounges, fast-track security, and car rental desks.

Domestic Trains

Train travel in Latvia is affordable, scenic, and highly reliable. Operated by Vivi (Pasažieru vilciens), trains are the best way to reach specific destinations from Riga.

Riga to Jūrmala

Departs every 30 mins. Take the train heading to Tukums or Sloka and disembark at Majori or Dzintari (30 mins trip).

Riga to Sigulda

Trains heading to Valmiera/Cēsis stop at Sigulda. The journey takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes through scenic forests.

Coach & Intercity Buses

For destinations not covered efficiently by train (like Liepāja, Kuldīga, or Ventspils), buses are the primary transport. The Riga International Coach Terminal (Autoosta) is located next to the Central Market.

  • Best for budget travel: Very cheap ticket prices.
  • Frequent connections: Major routes have departures every hour.
  • Operators: Lux Express for premium international routes, local carriers for domestic.

Car Rentals & Driving

Renting a car is highly recommended if you want to explore Latvia's national parks, hidden manors, and remote coastal villages at your own pace.

  • Requirements: Valid driver's license (International Driving Permit for non-EU).
  • Roads: Main highways (A roads) are well-maintained. Be prepared for unpaved gravel roads in deep rural areas.
  • Providers: Sixt, Avis, Hertz, and local providers available at RIX and downtown.

Cycling Routes

Latvia's flat terrain makes it ideal for cycling. Many cities are increasingly bike-friendly.

  • Riga to Jūrmala: A popular, dedicated 20km cycle path connecting the capital to the resort town.
  • Rentals: Apps like Nextbike are available in Riga and Jūrmala.
